Head Coach Jorge Peña
Coach Peña is the head football coach at Sanger High School. He has coached high school football for 31 years, the past four as a head coach. Coach Peña has taught at SHS for 25 years and currently teaches Business and Advanced Football P.E.
Coach Peña has coached at all levels and started his football career assisting at the Frosh & JV level before becoming the head JV football coach in 1996. His teams were a combined 19-1 those two seasons, while competing in the Tri River Athletic Conference.
Coach Peña began his varsity coaching career in 1998 and served as the offensive coordinator from 2000-2016. While serving as the offensive coordinator, Sanger played in six Central Section Championship games; winning four Section titles. They also competed in the 2016 Northern California Regional State Championship. During that span Sanger won eight league championships combined between the West Yosemite League and the County Metro Athletic Conference.
Coach Peña helped develop a powerful run-first style that has become Sanger’s offensive trademark, and under his guidance, Sanger’s offensive units have broken numerous school records, and produced players that hold the majority of the individual rushing and passing/receiving records in Sanger football history.
As the head football coach for the past four seasons, he has accumulated an overall record of 26-12. While embracing a tough offensive run game and stingy defensive mentality, the Apaches have appeared in the DI (’17, ’18) and DII (‘19) playoffs every year after competing in the tough CMAC conference. Sanger is a perennial contender for a league title, and most recently went undefeated in league play while winning the 2020-21 County Metro Athletic Conference Championship.
Coach Peña is married to Lisa and they have three children: Emma (20), John (18), and Luke (13).
He is a graduate of Sanger High School, class of ‘89, Reedley College, and CSU, Fresno.
